One Line Memories with the 2014 Daily Musings Journal

I was so excited when Jamie Ridler shared this Happiness Project Keep a One-Sentence Journal video with me. What a perfect idea for the 2014 Daily Musings Journal, I thought! So I wanted to share it with you, too.

The days are long, but the years are short.  —Gretchen Rubin

I hope you enjoy Gretchen Rubin‘s short video.

And if it inspires you to keep a one-sentence journal, maybe the 2014 Daily Musings Journal can help. Click here to check it out!

Create Symbols to Track Practices with the 2014 Daily Musings Journal

FutureCrestTrailDay

Some times you want (or need) to keep track of practices you have, or would like to incorporate into, your life – like what you eat, how you feel, your movement practice, or any creative practice.

As a mountain gal, I often hear about how many ski days this or that person in my life get in during a ski season. It’s like bragging rights when you live in the mountains. Although I’ve never been one of those 100 day gals (I have too many other things I love to do, too), I do like to track my days.

I actually like to track all of my active – my ski days, my bicycle rides, my hikes, my yoga practice…

It’s not really for any kind of training purposes – it is just fun for me to look back and reflect,
“Wow, I was on the mountain 25 days this season.”
And know that my ski pass was more than worth the investment.

Or “Wow, I got to pedal on some awesome trails this summer.”

I have a great little symbol for my bicycling. It is always easy for me to spot this activity on the week spread. But I’ve got no consistent symbol for marking my ski days.

PedalingSymbols

Notice how raw & messy (and still beautiful to me) the snippets from my days, just above, are. I do not spend tons of time on each entry (I would never keep up the practice if I did:), and each does not have to be perfect to be fun to look back on. I’ve had such a great time looking back on my year as I create these posts – I’ve found I love my pages, and the realization of the practice I’ve created for myself.
[confession – the image at the top of the post was created for especially for this post, to look a little less raw & messy]

How about you? Is there anything you’d like to track in your life? Do you have something that symbolizes this for you?

An easy one to start with may be a simple gold star. It’s so helpful to track our wins, and something that is easy to pass over. I know I’m guilty of not acknowledging my wins. I think I’ll just pop back to my initial launch day and add a gold start right now.

I look forward to creating a few new symbols for the coming.

And I hope you join me by creating a few symbols for yourself.

They don’t need to be literal – or make sense to anyone but you. Just be sure to make them easy to spot. You could even create a little key on one of the musings pages.

Hmmm…I think I might have to try that this coming year, too.

It’s going to be a whole new journey for me this year – beginning with a journal that is completely ready for me. And it’s exciting to know that some of you may be joining me to create a daily musings practice of your own.

Bring Color to Your Week with the 2014 Daily Musings Journal

As I was evolving the design of the Daily Musings Journal, for quite a while I would stamp each week – creating my journal month by month. It was fun to have the color built into the page.

April-week-color

There were a few drawbacks to this process. For one, the stamping process, as you might imagine, was quite time consuming. And after awhile the process was not fun, and I often fell behind.

Color on every page would have made the book prohibitively expensive to produce (to share with you), and if you’ve been following along for a bit you probably gather that I love to create pieces that allow you to embellish on your own. You can find a few downloadables ready for color here, here, and here.

Thus, the design of the Daily Musing Journal evolved to allow you to add your own splashes of color. The possibilities, again, are really endless.

Feb2014Week

Above I added color to the boxes and the month & year lettering, as well as stamped the hearts to create a ‘love’ theme for Valentine’s day.

I often use stamps to create a theme for my month. Many of my stamps are hand carved, as the hearts and tulips in the two photos in this post.

It’s also fun to create your musings with color – in this case I used colored pencils.

The writing implements I have used to add color include Staedtler triplus fineliner (colors) (used for the February spread above) and Prismacolor colored pencils. Both have worked well for me, and the markers do not seem to bleed through – which is important to me. I also use  Copic multiliners (black) for writing my daily musings – along with regular old #2 pencils. These have also worked well for me.

Cautionary note: The pages of the 2014 Daily Musings Journal are not immune to bleed through, so Sharpies are not recommended.  You may want to devote one of the extra musings pages to ‘testing’ your writing implements – if you have concern about bleed through.

Have fun playing with color as you muse!

Fit Simple Sketches & Doodles into Your Journaling with the 2014 Daily Musings Journal

10-29-EBlaunch-day <Here are the simple sketches I added to my musings on the day I launched the Daily Musings Journal for subscribers. Can you tell I was excited to put my new creation out into the world?

Two regulars also make an appearance on that day – a bicycle and a stick figure in downward dog.

FibarkDay16June On the right you’ll notice another bicycle (see I told you it was a regular), and also some musical notes, a cell phone, and a tiger.

All my simplistic, quick renditions add a playful dimension to the reminder of this fun June day!

Shakespeare-FullMoon Another fun June day with, you guessed it, another bicycle – and also the memory for a beautiful full moon rise.

You can see I’ve used a bit of the writing techniques I mentioned yesterday, and also added a border around my muffins’ text at the top.

Muffins make a regular appearance in my musings – because the ones I bake my husband and me are a regular breakfast staple.

It is all messy & raw, but each are playful reminders of my days.

Below is a little bit cleaner rendition of a few of the simple sketches that make an appearance in my daily musings. I don’t feel like I am proficient at drawing  (I’ve even written about how this is a goal of mine) so I keep it simple, honest.

Sketch-Images

Mike Rohde’s Sketchnote Handbook is a great resource for simple sketches, as well as lettering and border ideas.

I hope this inspires your daily musings, and I hope you’ll check out my 2014 Daily Musings Journal if you’re looking for a new place to add those musings.

Enjoy musing!

Remember Your Day with Creative Flair with the 2014 Daily Musings Journal

Raw, messy & personal week spread, September 2013

Raw, messy & personal – week spread, September 2013

9-29toYosemiteOn the left you can see I’ve added a bit of text at a different scales – to emphasize the arrival to Yosemite National Park (part of our recent fall road trip).

I also used squiggly lines to divide up some of the text.

It’s messy & raw, and I hope illustrates that perfection is not important here:)

On the right is another example of how I used scale and some different writing play.

You can play with your writing in a number of different ways. Below are some examples I created to give you some ideas.

You can use all kinds of fun & simple lines to divide up the text you add to your musings.

And here is a ‘fake day’ I created to show (a bit of, um, less messy) use of some of these ideas.

FakeDay1I hope this inspires you to muse daily!
